Pharmaceuticals in our water; Repeat Offender

We've heard all about traces of drugs in our drinking water.

Unfortunately, that may seem pretty minor in comparison if you happen to live near a drug production plant that's located on a waterway. According to a Pharmalot report, Merck violated the Clean Water Act with three chemical discharges into the water supplies of Pennsylvania, in the US. One of these discharges was so extreme that the entire city of Philadelphia had to shut down drinking water temporarily.

Nice.

For that little misstep, Merck paid a fine of more than $20 million in 2007.

So... lesson learned?

What If... When you went to the Doc.

Mark Sisson over at Mark's Daily Apple took my interest with this:

"What I’d really like to see is a little high-def moving graphical representation of your arterial health. Like, instead of getting a single snapshot of the state of your blood lipids, you’d go into the doctor’s office and strap on a non-invasive device (which, if required for its operation, applies the perfect dose of ionizing radiation to provoke a hormetic response, rather than a pathogenic one) that monitors your blood lipid activity. You’d wear it for maybe a week, during which time it would monitor your blood,

Oxygen, Energy and Age

I've been doing quite a bit of research lately into the relationship of the pH of our blood and its ability to hold oxygen. Few people really think about where oxygen we breathe in goes after the lungs. In fact it undergoes a quite miraculous transfer to the blood, which then sends it all overt the body to supply energy to every cell. But if our blood is too acidic, we have a problem. Oxygen carrying capacity falls sharply when the ideal alkaline pH falls towards acid.

That's a major, major reason we as a generation (talking to you, Boomers and beyond!) are always tired. We are inflamed,

Does an alkaline diet REALLY support bone growth?

It's a resounding YES! ResearcherDr Bess Dawson-Hughes of Tufts University found that diets high in cereal grains and proteins actually produce an excess of acid in the body, and may weaken bones and increase calcium excretion.

The study found that increasing the alkali content of the diet, the opposite effect and strengthens bone health.

‘Heredity, diet, and other lifestyle factors contribute to the problem of bone loss and fractures,’ said lead author Dr Bess Dawson-Hughes of Tufts University. ‘When it comes to dietary concerns regarding bone health, calcium and vitamin D have

Ohio Town Citizens go on unplanned Acid trip

BELLAIRE, Ohio – Water service for thousands of residents returned to normal Tuesday, a day after the system was flushed to remove hydrochloric acid accidentally added to the village's supply.

Forty pounds of the acid were added to Bellaire's water Sunday after a supplier shipped the wrong chemical and the filtration system crew mistook the containers for fluoride. The error was discovered Monday morning when workers noticed fluoride levels were lower than normal.

Calcium, Milk, Alkalizing.. and colorectal cancer

The net allows me quite a different impression of information.

Information is no longer the preserve of the powerful, drip fed to the masses. It is now the opposite. It's something that is now so available that we get it within minutes of its release and in my case, I've been able to watch it 'mutate' as it spreads across the web. Such is the case of this article on the role of calcium in colorectal cancer. The article originally came from the Archives of Internal medicine but I found it on the site of a vitamin company, NutraIngredients.com in Europe.

However within 24 hours the milk

Calcium and Cancer: a pretty convincing study.

This is no small study. It is based on a study of 492,000people. It was just released a few days ago, and it comes from the Archives of Internal Medicine. It suggests that the more calcium you have, especially as you age, the less likely you are to develop some forms of cancer.

The seven year study of almost half a million people showed that around 10% - 50,000 - contracted cancer,

Oxidation at work

This video shows oxidation at work on a humble apple, yet it's the same oxidation that imperceptibly yet inexorably ages you me and the family dog.
Oxidation is caused by acids.
When we die our acids take over and we rot.
Acids and ageing are, in this sense, synonomous.

While we are on the subject, let's discuss apples.. and carrots, and mangoes and all things that make for wonderful juices.

An off-the-shelf high speed juicer is an excellent oxidiser. The heat it generates as it mecerates the fruit or vegetable kills the enzymes that keep a glass of juice alive, oxidation begins

Business Ethics Today

I just spent 3 hours discussing the the question of business ethics with a psychologist friend of mine. The freeform notes below are a ‘yet to be organised’ collection of thoughts I have had since that discussion.

Firstly, I suggest that we could ask ourselves why we are in business. Is it because we want money? Why do we want money? What is money alleviating or fulfilling in us? This may seem obvious but it may vary greatly depending on the dominant belief system or systems we live life by. Some of us may see a business as a living, a way to beat the system, or a way to live the

Vinegar for Weight Loss?

Animals fed a high-fat diet and supplemented with acetic acid developed about 10 per cent less body fat than mice just eating the diet, according to findings published in theJournal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

If the results can be repeated in further studies, particularly in human studies, it could see vinegar establish itself in the burgeoning weight management category.

So it makes sense that your ultimate strategy for a pain - and stone-free - future is staying fully hydrated and alkaline.

Metabolic acids and acids that you ingest in daily life can accumulate in your fluids and tissues. In the process of neutralising these acids,

Sodium Bicarbonate as an alkalizer

I'm often asked about sodium bicarb, or 'Bicarb' as most people know it, as an alkalizer.

Briefly, it works, but of course it doesn't have the advantages of alkaline ionized water because it doesn't come in a microclustered form, which supports daily detox, and it isn't loaded with negative hydrogen ions which makes the water such a fabulous antioxidant.

Still.. it does alkalize, because that's what it is; an alkaline salt. However it has been used as a 'folk' remedy for decades and with a little ignorance this can lead to some pretty terrible situations when used improperly. .. such as

The doctor has told her to stop drinking lots of water, it's not good for you

Craig, I'm not surprised. Drinkers of reverse Osmosis water, distilled water or straight rainwater can expect this effect if they seek to hydrate by drinking large amounts of water. Why? Because the body's

He's been complaining to local officials that the filter, from his son-in-law's house next door, shouldn't be so dirty and gray.

It turns out Holbrook's drinking water in Pinconning Township has bacteria in it.

Samples taken by the Bay County Department of Water and Sewer outside Holbrook's home in Pinconning Township have

Put another way, one degree of hardness increase caused a corresponding one degree or percent of decrease in acute myocardial

Antidepressants like fluoxetine, the active ingredient in Prozac, block the reuptake by neurons of serotonin, a neurotransmitter strongly tied to emotion, appetite and aggression, according to the article.

Donna Smet and Jason Guerrero have created a prize winning video on how nicotine creates a dependence in humans. It's a wonderful video, but as I was watching I was amazed to hear that nicotine actually releases alkaline minerals calcium, potassium and sodium by actiavting ion channels. The released minerals initiate an electrical impulse, in turn generating an action potential, which rapidly transmite down the axon towards the reward area of the brain. Here, it stimulates the release of neurotransmitters including the 'happy chemical' dopamine. Of course, this effect doesn't last, leading to

CKD afflicts 20 million Americans who have hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and other conditions. The kidney has less oxygen reserves than other organs to start, and CKD is associated with less capillary blood flow, reducing oxygenation even further. As CKD

The study found that it's the ethanol that brings on the headache because it produces acetate (yes, that clear plastic sheeting stuff!). When researchers induced headaches in rats using ethanol, then fed the lil' critters caffeine and anti-inflammatories, they found it blocked the acetate production and relieved the

A Little Traveller Came Home with me

Why do I carry a Fill2Pure bottle whenever I travel? This article from Sherry Brescia sums it up pretty well! But I remember the day a waterborne bug caught up with me in Northern India.
Three weeks later I emerged many kilos lighter from a Nepal hospital.

If you've ever had a stomach bug, food poisoning or traveler's diarrhea, you've experienced first-hand the power of harmful bacteria in your gut overpowering the good.

Illnesses like that create vivid memories of an intimate relationship with your toilet...and the relief when the agony finally passed!

In an ideal world,

A Telling Post about Clean Water

Charlie Meurer is a senior chemical engineer at Stanley Consultants, Iowa. He specialises in water purification. I think his summation of the environmental status of mour water supplies is 'right on'.

"You must die from some cause as it is the will of Allah. There are still radionuclides in the environment from the genius atmospheric tests of hydrogen bombs in the late 50s and early 60s. Fauna in some river basins have been affected by excreted pharmaceuticals that pass through the waste treatment systems. We pride ourselves on being cutting edge of science and the best version of the

Is an Orange alkaline?

I'm going through some serious re-evaluation. You see, I'm getting queries from people about what food is alkaline, and what's not - as usual. After all, I wrote a book on it.

But I'm beginning to see that there is so much more to the alkaline diet. Take an orange. By accepted alkaline theory, an orange is 'alkaline' meaning that after it has been metabolised or 'burnt up' by our bodies in conversion of food to energy, there are more alkaline minerals left than acid. So far so good.. and I'm sure most of you would agree.

But what if the eater of the orangee is, like most of us, already

Reasonable Health Decisions

Yesterday I had an appointment with my acupuncturist. Neil is a wonderful guy. An Aikido master, practitioner of Zen for thirty years, and wise beyond words. So our sessions are always peppered with some excellent to-ing and fro-ing.

After six months in Italy and the Italian diet of coffee and red wine interspersed with food, he said I was in good shape. Then he threw in the clunker. "The Cancer Council has finally come out and stated categorically that any alcohol at all heightens your risk of all cancers. Even though red wine has been shown to be good for the heart, its coronary benefits

Is your Reverse Osmosis Water stealing nutrients from your body?

That glass of water treated by reverse osmosis (RO) water purifier in your home is certainly keeping you healthy. But it may also be responsible for filtering out minerals that help assimilate vital nutrients and produce vitamin B-12.
No, it's not proven. Scientific studies and researches are yet to establish this, but conjectures by physicians point a finger at the consumption ofRO water for increasingly large-scale vitamin B-12 deficiency.

Vitamin B-12 deficiency can cause various health problems. Constant back pain, knee pain, fatigue, lack of concentration, loss of appetite, shortness

Outrageous Facts about Bottled Water

[caption id="attachment_831" align="alignleft" width="600" caption="California Breakfast"][/caption]

Just back from LA, I'm still reeling from the effect of consumer lifestyle in The US. I'm not saying that we aren't a consumer society here in Australia, but most Australians who've visited the US say the same; it's like looking into the future. And here is what Los Angeles people are confronted with at the local breakfast bar!

I also spent almost an hour in a huge Whole Foods store. The sheer volume of bottled water reminded me of this page about bottled water.

To Fruit or not to fruit?

We are very happy to have our very own Naturopath, Nicola Simpson joining us at AlkaWay.

Today we decided that with Nicola’s help, we are going to tackle a few dominant paradigms together.
This morning was our first brainstorm and the subject was whether fruit as actually bad for us, or
the golden dreamfood we have been told it really is.

Cassie, Nicola and I met and brainstormed the history of fruit and what it really does.. or doesn't do for us.
Cassie made the point that a hundred years ago, long before the geneticists got to it, fruit was smaller and contained less sugar.
So
